MinXus Mail Bag: Has the real Claudia McGill (Wyncote, Pennsylvania, USA) been zip-locked by Trashpo hype?

Claudia McGill - 1

Mail-art by Claudia McGill (Wyncote, Pennsylvania, USA)

Claudia McGill sent this stunning, over-sized postcard collage, which has found its way to the Overlook Hotel where a large part of the MinXus USA archives are currently housed.

Not long ago, Claudia’s grand entrance into the Eternal Network was met with praise and warm embraces from the practitioners of Trashpo. Her furniture catalog collage pieces created a positive splash, immediately earning her a TrashPo Litzer Prize. Some whispered that her household landscapes, devoid of humanity, suggested a certain affinity to postmodernism. Claudia was on her way. Claudia McGill was a Trashpo All Star.

As we ponder the beauty of her work, her singular talent for abstraction and textures, her ability with colour – we find ourselves asking: Is Claudia’s work really Trashpo? Stated, perhaps better, should we apply the clumsy measure of the Trashpo anti-aesthetic to every piece Claudia McGill makes?

If he taught us anything, the eminent Professor Derrida taught us to untangle and dispel the preconceived assumptions, the social, cultural, political and economic “constructs” that imprison our perceptions and the “text” itself. Or stated, perhaps better, look at the the thing in itself closely, very, very closely; and do not accept what someone else has told you that it is. That, partially, might be the beginning of a deconstruction or decomposition.

Without total obliteration we, along with you oh ever-faithful Tenderfoots, look at the reverse side of Claudia’s mail-art:

More textural beauty? What might we take away, as well as a deep appreciation of Claudia McGill’s brilliance? Oh… that is enough. Deepest thanks!

Thank you for gracing the humble MinXus-Lynxus blog with that particularly sumptuous work, Miss Claudia.

Of course we like to have fun, and there is some fun in this as we stand outside the official art establishment; but we felt it important to convey that every Claudia McGill piece in the network not immediately receive the Trashpo label without contemplation. That is not meant to suggest, of course, that your contributions to Trashpo are not considerable.

Dw – see what you can rustle up in the Mink Ranch Gift Shop to send Ms. Claudia. She is in Philadelphia or thereabouts. Benjamin Franklin, now there was a man…

I like to think that I am uncategorizable (if that is a word). I say this, and you hear my family snickering in the background, as they’ve certainly heard it before! Never mind, I appreciate the compliment (that I just paid to myself, it sounds like). Oh well, you know what I mean. I’ll just say thank you again, and stop.

Gosh, thanks for stopping by, Neil.Good Point. Maybe we can manage to stay one step ahead of the constructs or outside them.
