MinXus Mail Bag: Some Asemic Doggerel by Mars Tokyo? (Baltimore, Maryland)

Mail art by Mars Tokyo (Baltimore, Maryland, USA)

We have been fans of Mars Tokyo’s art for a long time. This is the first time we have received mail from her. To say the least, we are thrilled and offer our customary warm MinXus “Howdy” and extend a secret Mink Ranch handshake to this ever-so-talented resident of Baltimore.

Mars Tokyo’s art has been exhibited widely in addition to her faithful support of the mail art network. She is extremely versatile, working in watercolor, pastel, lithography, etching, photography, digital modes and assemblage, among others. In particular, we have greatly enjoyed her “Theater of the 13th Dimension” series:

We think this collage Mars Tokyo sent us is FAB! Beyond the humor and play, she obviously has a good eye for powerful images. The intricate system of roots (branches? vines?) is mesmerizing. Although she likely thinks more in terms of the visual arts, we find a language-suggestive, asemic dimension in the work, which is an application of the organic eco-asemic theory we have proposed elsewhere and will not burden you with, dear Tenderfoots, in this celebratory blog. We do think that if Tenderfoots put on their asemic glasses, they might gain an even greater appreciation of this work.
