MinXus Mail Bag: In which we gain an inkling from Richard Canard (Carbondale, Illinois, USA) – or did he mean to write Minkohol?

Mail-art by Richard Canard (Carbondale, Illinois, USA)

Our dear friend Richard Canard (did we ever mention he was a member of Ray Johnson’s New York Correspondance School?) is a perfect match for the current Conceptual Poetry movement. The purveyors seem to believe visual poetry is part of their domain as they are, for instance, very comfortable with our friend and idol David Baptiste-Chirot.

Our only concern about Conceptual Poetry is that it is a “movement” that seems to have arisen completely within elite universities, is promoted largely by university presses, and the main practitioners are professors. Artificial culture that is kept on life support by institutions (and where do those specific institutions obtain their funding?) because otherwise it would not survive for a moment in fresh air concerns us, as we are interested in participating in a living culture where everyone can participate in its creation, devoid of “gatekeepers” as much as is possible.

In this piece, we see our intrepid Richard the Ion Hearted flawlessly integrating word and image through the unintended inkblot, presented to us as (we assume feigned) an error in penmanship. This works on a number of levels. We can see how the word itself could seamlessly become a drawing, bridging the divide between text and image. We are reminded of imperfection. While much art strives for perfection and artists are encouraged to discard or conceal “errors,” is it possible that art can be found in the “errors” ? There is a hint of asemics without being asemic.  We believe Richard Canard is suggesting this. What’s more, the postcard is funny. Poetry can be ink-toxicating?
