MinXus Mail Bag: Visual grammar of the de-Clairative sentence by Claire Dinsmore (Lawrenceville, New Jersey, USA)

Mail-art book by Claire Dinsmore (Lawrenceville, New Jersey, USA)

Mink Rancher frequently says, “You’re always a day late and a dollar short, Dw.” And so we are, remiss in not having shared Clare Dinsmore’s Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? with you much sooner. However, this extraordinarily beautiful, elegantly produced,  three-fold book has certainly received exposure and praise elsewhere. Claire Dinsmore’s work is representative of the aesthetic side of MinXus-Lynxus. We have even stated her work with Trashpo is a bit too refined; thus we called it Schwitterspo.

Due to our own technical limitations and the even greater limitations of the Bunk House scanner (aka Skynet IX (others have been destroyed), we have had to cut-up our images so you will not see the flow of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” but you will at least see the pages.

From Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? by Claire Dinsmore

Claire Dinsmore is an articulate writer. She is adept at visual syntax; so in this case, we do not find it necessary to provide a running interpretation with the images. The play with accepted symbols gives you a firm foundation outside the text. The tonal qualities of the reds running through the book are astounding as well as the play of shapes.

Claire Dinsmore admires Da Da. We conclude from her writing, however, that she is ultimately informed by Surrealism. The visual=textual elements of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? are laden with symbolism (called by some “surplus signification”) and – oh Lord that we should write this: meta-textual reference. The shoe fits. Does she make reference to Judy Omaha or Nancy Chicago, or whoever that was? We’re still stuck on Breakfast of Champions. Did Lacan write “The Signification of the Phallus”? Has anyone written “The Signification of the Vagina”? Claire makes a good start.

We also note haptic elements and that – wow – this edition was smaller than we thought. What an honour! You know it has found a good home in the MinXus USA archives.

A lovely personal note to accompany Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner – although we admit to blushing redder than the book. Well, you know the Bunk House rules: “No ‘cussin. No spittin’. No public lewdness.” MinXus-Lynxus is a huge supporter of Pussy Riot, of course, our comrades indeed, so we will allow for the borderline language.

Many Tenderfoots encountered Claire Dinsmore when she was residing in Pittsburgh. She has been very diligent about keeping people informed of her relocation to Lawrenceville, New Jersey. But, yes, Claire is now in New Jersey.

Warmest thanks for sending this lovely work to MinXus-Lynxus.

    This was a Valentine?
Really sweet, reminds me of Nick Bantock’s work.

The date is November 12, 2012 – you know how long it takes to get things posted here at the ranch. So, no, not a valentine.

I know it took her a long time to move from Pittsburgh to NJ. I think she’s settled in NJ now.

OMG – you know that Nick Bantock reference reminded me. Do you remember that woman at Yoma, she called herself Socrates, claimed to have some connection to Nick Bantock. She wanted people to send her m-a and sign over the rights because she was planning to sell it? The poor woman was shredded – like one of those scenes of someone being eaten alive by pirhana (too lazy to check spelling).

Pussy Riot was sentenced in August, so… it’s a Love Letter! If Love is Blind, how can it read the Calendar, anyway?
About Socrates… wise ideas emerge before the brain becomes fully engaged… huh. Imagine that. It probably seemed to her to be a good idea at the time.

It does give new meaning to the story of Pandora’s Box.
