MinXus-Lynxus First International Exhibition of Holes – Surprise Posthumous Entry by Ray Johnson [via Gregoire Antonin]

Grigori1It’s been a long time without mail from Grigori so I was extremely chuffed to find this envelope addressed to Her Royal Highness Marie Antonette at the International House of Holes (en Francais) in my mailbox.

Die Unwissenheit von Grigori Antonin wird überwertet” – “The ignorance of Grigori Antonin is overrated“, says the back of the envelope. That’s a great quote, Grigori! A while ago we were talking about the great humility [(not)] of mail artists in general, so I am putting this into the Catalog of International Mail Art Humility. It’s going to be a thick one…

Much to my surprise, the envelope contained no less than Ray Johnson’s participation to the International Exhibition of Holes! An unexpected and extremely V.I.P. guest for MinXus-Lynxus.

There is no doubt that Mr. Ray Johnson had an extremely wide range in his art, but I wasn’t aware of his flirtations with Holism. Not unlike Niklas Heed, Ray Johnson has contributed to the Exhibition with a piece that is based on the physics of Holism. And maybe to a certain extent to its philosophy. If you look into a mirror with a small hole you will see your face. If you look into the hole itself and the other end of the box is sealed with paper you will see nothing, even if the sun is shining on it. What is the message? I have been thinking about this for a while and I am going in circles. I just feel like poking a hole in that tracing paper, and problem solved. Or is it?
Grigori, thank you for sending such a unique and thought provoking piece. Yet another jewel in the MinXus Lynxus Collection and an instant classic!

It says holes in series so I’m hoping there will be more. I’ve been told there is a microscopic grigAnt somewhere but I can’t find a trace of it.

Mighty fine entry to the Hole Circus.

I do see the point/connection. For one thing, Ray Johnson had that “nothing” thing going on; and holes are a kind of nothing.

Rayjo did indeed live in the same building as John Cage for a time & let us not forget a fella like Merce Cunningham too as well as some others who I think were there – Morty Feldman?
