MinXus Mail Bag: Fluxus event score machine from Not Hi Ng, O.T.M. (San Pablo, California, USA)

Fluxus Event Score Machine - 1

Fluxus event score machine by Not Hi Ng, O.T.M. (San Pablo, California, USA)

First, apologies for these terrible scans that do not do justice to the brilliance of this wondrous piece sent to the Mink Ranch by our good friend Not Hi Ng, O.T.M. (Order of the Tangerine Mink). We are honoured to provide a debut.

Not Hi Ng is not only an artist, he is an inventor (if such distinctions apply). He has already received widespread praise in the Eternal Network for his “trash talk” pieces: Trashpo constructed from consumer debris with an audio component aka “audible Trashpo.” (Our archived piece, for instance, has the sound of a rooster crowing when a button is pressed.)

Now he has applied himself with great success to the construction of a Fluxus machine, actually part of a long tradition.

Not Hi Ng calls this an “Automated FLUXUS activity selector.” In MinXus fashion, we consider it a FluXus event score machine – a minor difference in wording that really does not matter.

This appears to be a discarded child’s toy. You press the button on the right and a red light circulates through the colours, finally stopping on one (randomly selected?) colour. That directs you to a specific event score.

Not Hi Ng has written not one but six event scores. The “Automated FLUXUS activity selector” chooses one of the scores, which the participant is meant to perform. Of course, interacting with the machine is also a performance. Here is another scan that, hopefully, enables you to read the scores:

Fluxus event score machine - 2

These are all great event scores!

Yet has our Order of the Tangerine Mink sage Not Hi Ng really produced yet another thought-provoking essay for his Ray Johnsonian philosophy of nothingness?

Every time Dark wall engages with the machine, first pressing the yellow button, the red light directs him to the third score: “Do Nothing, keeping in mind that nothing is as it should be.”

Dark wall is more than pleased to perform the nothing score. It gets better every time.

Deepest thanks to Mink Ranch fav, Not Hi Ng!

Many thanks for posting this DW, and I like your edited title. This started out as a completely different piece and when I changed it to select FLUXUS scores I didn’t change the name from an activity selector, brain freeze I think.

Thank you for stopping by, Not Hi Ng. Mighty pleased to be able to exhibit this work first at MinXus-Lynxus.

Plans are to show it at Yoma eventually. Miss Alicia sent a Trashpo Monkey Asemic Writing D-Koder. Should be a great line-up.

We’ve called some MinXus pieces performance scores, which is accurate. Most of the archived “Old Fluxus” materials are called Events Scores, so we’re trying to make sure you earn your rightful place in history.

    Again, thanks!
